This isn't NEW news, but I'm way behind and found this interesting. 5 Burros will be expanding into Red Hook with outdoor space and an improved menu. Why an improved menu? See, Brooklynites have a more refined palate than you plebians.

ReplyDeleteI read this as well. I hope the boycott works because when it comes to Mexican in central Queens nobody beats 5 burro. Maybe now I can get a table! Furthermore, they are right, when it comes to FoHi the palate is quite unrefined. Have u ever seen the lines at TGI Fridays or the crowd at T-Bone? Price is a more discrimintating factor in FoHi than taste.
ReplyDeleteI like TGIF for what it is (Get something fried or a burger, you cannot go wrong) but I don't understand why anyone would eat at the T-Bone. Yechhhh!
ReplyDeleteChain restaurants are fine. They fill a craving. And I don't see their mere existence as a sign that a neighborhood is a weak dining spot. The UWS has an UNO's and Chelsea has an Olive Garden and an Outback.
ReplyDeleteWhat I find particularly... hypocritical? pot calling the kettle black? fucked up? is that the residents of the neighborhood are being told they're unsophisticated by the owners of what might be the least sophisticated restaurant on Austin street that doesn't sell pizza.
I like TGIF as much as the next guy but for real that is the HAPPENING spot in town and before Taphouse the only REAL bar scene in FoHi.
ReplyDeleteI wonder whether they've ever even tried to bring in some of the more authentic fare into the Austin Street restaurant. From what I can recall, the specials list is usually pretty boring (fish with vegetables, chicken with vegetables).
ReplyDeleteI'm fine with them being who they are: a yummy Mexican restaurant that plays up its kitchy toy drinks rather than having a decent tequila list. But the dig at Forest Hills consumers was unnecessary.

SO annoying. My former-Texan palate would like to say that 5 Burros has the worst tex-mex I've had in NY. Once I found parsley on a burrito instead of cilantro.
ReplyDeleteAnd yet it's full every night...maybe the owner is right about some in his current clientele, but he could attract a different kind of customer if the food and not the bar were the attraction.
