Q (a Thai bistro) sits on cozy Ascan Avenue right around the corner from busy Austin Street. With its neat, comfortable and playful but classy interior, it's is one of a handful of restaurants that feel like a slice of Greenwich Village right here in Queens. Q is usually busy, but you always feel like you're surrounded by, if not friends, then at least by people you know and like. Q is consistantly one of the first places I think of when I want to impress upon people that living outside of Manhattan does not reduce eating out to diners, fast food, or dirty bodegas. It's hardly the cheapest place in the neighborhood, but it's worth the money. My one complaint is their brunch menu, which is noticeably weak. But coming in the spring or summer evenings to sit on the front sofa seats with a glass of wine and a snack can't be beat.

Jon - just wanted to re-post my review of brunch at Q where it belongs :) ........
ReplyDeleteAlso want to start by stating that I used to be a big fan of Q's dinner, but found that for the money (it will definitely cost you a decent amount for dinner + wine), I was always leaving the restaurant hungry. I'm not a super-size it kind of gal, but I do like to feel full when I leave a restaurant where I just dropped $70.
Living super-close, I was hopeful that this could become my new brunch spot, as I really always enjoyed the atmosphere. So, I gave brunch a try this past Sunday.
Got there right at 12 noon when they open. My friend and I both had eggs Benedict with the filet (he had the hollandaise sauce, which I passed on). Even though we were the only customers in the restaurant, by the time we got our eggs they weren't even warm and as for the filet mignon - we both thought it had a "funky" taste.
Had to ask the waitress 3x to bring ground pepper to the table (she was busy making herself a cup of tea and talking to the cook) and never was asked if we wanted a refill on our coffee (which I really did -- the coffee at least was excellent).
I think for now I will stick with Tuscan Hills and the Forest Hills Diner for future brunches. Hopeful that with all the vacancies on Austin Street more options may open up!
